Fight the Battle of Distractions

I recently listened to a podcast called The Living Easy Podcast by Lindsey Maestas. I listened to a few episodes and fell in love with her podcast. I came across Episode 7: 6 Ways Your Phone Is Changing You. This podcast really made me rethink the addiction I have to my phone. I never really thought of it as an addiction until I kept reaching for my phone after two seconds after I put it down, to pick it right back up again.Effortlessly, I would go back to the same apps I was just looking at. Don’t get me wrong I love social media apps like Instagram and TikTok. However, I found myself spending so much time there instead of doing things I should do that actually bring me joy. Or spending time with people I really care about more often than I do.

The podcast mentioned, I took it as a challenge, of not using your phone for the first hour you’re awake. I decided to take up that challenge for one week. I was truly amazing on how refreshed I felt. My entire day shifted and be more productive, more creative, and filled with energy. On a normal day, I would wake up have a cup of coffee ready. Have my phone right next to me with music playing(either Maverick City or Bethel), my journal, and bible. Once I took my phone at the equation and just sat in silence. Wow, I was shocked to have silence be so relaxing. Something that I don't do very often. I am normally busy and on the go. But just taking the first hour waking up early is so worth it to be still and allowed an opportunity to hear my Heavenly Father’s voice without all the distractions on my phone. The benefits I see from this are more face to face time with those around me, a clear mind, more productive, and the best part of all I was able to spend non distracted time with God.

I loved the first week of this challenge so much I had to share it with the students I work with. We all looked at our screen time from are fancy smart phones. Some were shocked on the high amount of hours spend on our phone, watching videos, and time spent on specific apps. We don’t even realize how real the addiction is when we all have a phone at our finger tips. This challenge was what I needed to start a new habit. It excites me to wake up and be still.

I challenge you to this for the first hour of your day. You can do it, it is worth it!
